 Reflections

Reflections ProgramThe PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance quality arts education. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create works of art in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts for fun and recognition. Any PTA/PTSA in good standing is eligible to sponsor a Reflections Program.

2011-2012 “Diversity Means” New York State Results

New York students created nearly 20,000 entries for our 2011-2012 Reflections Program, “Diversity Means.” Thank you for participating in our Reflections Program! Out of the 550 pieces that advanced to New York State PTA, we are proud to present 117 awards. Congratulations to all students who advanced to the State level of judging!

Our 24 Award of Excellence entries (one entry per grade division in each category) were forwarded to National PTA to compete in the final round of judging. National PTA will make the results available after the annual convention in June. Nationally recognized students will receive communication directly from either National PTA or New York State PTA and we will post the information on our website when the results are available. We wish our New York students well at the national level!

2012-2013 Reflections Theme is “The Magic of a Moment”

Encourage students to unleash their artistic talents, reflect on the theme and create original works of art. Write a story or script; compose music or a photograph; create a dance or a painting. It is never too early to start. Allow the theme “the Magic of a Moment” to inspire creativity and spark imaginations.

Reflections Theme Search

Students’ shaping the direction for each Reflections Program year is one of National PTAs greatest points of pride. The Reflections theme is selected from hundreds of ideas submitted by students to the PTA Reflections Program Theme Search Contest.

Deadline: The deadline to apply for the 2013-2014 Reflections Theme Search has passed. Theme Search entries are no longer being accepted. Click here for a link to National PTA’s General Information on the Reflections Theme Search.

New York State Theme Contest Results

This year, 225 students across New York State submitted their theme search ideas. In a blind-judging process, New York State PTA selected the top five theme search entries. This year’s winning state theme search entries are:

    • "Believe, Dream, Inspire"
    • "Dare To Care"
    • "In My Lifetime, I will…"
    • "Now is the time to…"
    • "You’re Beautiful because…"

Congratulations to the winning entrants! These five themes idea are forwarded on to the National PTA to compete in the nationwide search for the 2013-2014 Reflections Theme. National PTA will announce the winning theme during the 116th National PTA Convention in June. We wish these students all the best in the national level of the 2013-2014 Reflections Theme Search Contest.

Mary Lou Anderson Reflections Arts Enhancement Grant Program

The Mary Lou Anderson Reflections Arts Enhancement Grant Program is designed to enhance arts education for students in their classroom or other learning environment through the introduction of new technologies or methods, visiting artists or other activities.

“National PTA is proud to support PTAs that are making an effort to keep kids active in the arts. Through these grants, children will be able to continue to express themselves artistically, which research shows will help them perform better academically,” said Betsy Landers, National PTA President.

Deadline: The deadline to apply this year has passed. Grant applications are not currently being accepted.

This year’s grant winners will:

• launch an After-School Arts Program for students in grades K-5.
• implement a Ceramic Sculptural Totems project.
• incorporate arts and diversity through “Who We Are,” a school-wide year-long program.

What ideas could your unit/council propose for this grant opportunity next year?
