June 12, 2017 (Albany) – “We are extremely pleased by today’s Regents decision to reduce the 3-8 Math and English Language Arts Assessment to two administration days each as opposed to three days of testing each,” offered Gracemarie Rozea, NYS PTA President. “Parents continue to be concerned about the length, content and use of the assessments, and this is a step forward to help alleviate some of those concerns.

“As a parent of a second grader soon to be in third grade, I fully understand the concern regarding standardized assessments and today’s action is a great step in the right direction,” added Kyle Belokopitsky, NYS PTA Executive Director. “We look forward to continuing to work with our Education Department and other stakeholders to ensure that required assessments are developmentally appropriate, short in duration and used for diagnostic purposes.”

Catherine Romano, NYS PTA Education Coordinator said, “This is an important move forward as New York revises its standards and assessments for children. We stand ready to provide feedback ensuring, most importantly, that parents and children are supported during this rebuilding of our learning, assessment and reporting system.”
