Utica, NY (July 24, 2017) – Hundreds of parents, caregivers and educators attended a critical Leadership Conference at Utica College, as they continue their mission to support New York’s students, families, educators and schools.
“Summer Leadership Conference brings parents, caregivers and educators from around the state together, to tackle the challenges facing our schools and communities and to celebrate successes,” said NYS PTA President Gracemarie Rozea. “We are especially thankful to our members in attendance for giving up their time to ‘Lead the Way’ to support ALL children.”
Keynote presentations included information from the NYS Office of Mentoring, discussion of the Citizen Preparedness Corps, and a National PTA perspective on ‘Why PTA.’
Further, 37 different workshops include training on supporting children with special needs, increasing advocacy, combating the heroin and opiod crisis, and other important issues such as school aid, tax cap, community schools, family engagement, and transition to the new Every Student Succeeds Act and new standards.
“Each day, thousands upon thousands of parents and caregivers support children and families in our schools,” added 1st Vice President Judy Van Haaren. “Attendees at Summer Leadership renewed their commitment to making every child’s potential a reality and we look forward to continuing to do this work statewide and year-long.”
Executive Director Kyle Belokopitsky offered, “I am always amazed, and humbled, each and every day at the dedication and commitment of parents, from Montauk to Buffalo, from Plattsburgh to Jamestown. Each and every child in New York is one step ahead because of the dedication of PTA members.”
One of the highlights of the Summer Leadership Conference was a service project coordinated by the NYS PTA Youth Member. This year, NYS PTA proudly collected hundreds of new and gently used shoes and sneakers for Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency.
