The website for Forest Lake Elementary School features a message from principal Thomas Burke, who states that the building is a place where parents, teachers, and administrators work together to “foster a learning environment where everyone can grow to their fullest potential.” It is precisely this type of all-hands-in leadership that drove the school’s PTA to become the first unit in New York state to reach 100 members for the 2026-2027 school year! With a winning combination of rock-solid communication methods, strong team collaboration, and an enthusiastic parent community, this unit demonstrates that the path to greatness often begins with small, carefully crafted steps.
The executive committee, led by Co-Presidents Christine Devito and Laura Graci, created a plan that approached membership as more than just a task to be completed on caregivers’ neverending to-do lists. Rather, it was framed as a way for families to become involved and engaged in ways that made sense for them, on their own time and within their capabilities. Using QR codes for easy signup at several back to school events and orientation nights, the team was able to capture parent attention early last September, setting the tone with incentives for those who joined by a certain date. This year, members who signed up by July 31 were entered into a giveaway for a premium speaker and fashionable hoodie. According to Vice President of Membership Cristine Rizzuto, a multi-layered communication network including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp group chats, and weekly emails ensures that current and potential members have access to the latest PTA information, as well as grade-specific updates.
Another way Forest Lake PTA has been able to cultivate a thriving school community is by requiring that all volunteers be dues-paying members. Instead of serving as a barrier to participation, this practice ensures that individuals not only understand the value of their membership, but serve as walking examples of how collective action can yield amazing results. In an effort to cater to the variety of modern working families, Forest Lake’s meetings are held in-person with the option to join virtually, and an afterschool program provides enrichment opportunities for students of all grades.
As the beginning of the school year looms ahead, Forest Lake PTA’s membership continues to grow, projected to reach 200 before the end of August. With a supportive administration, dedicated executive committee, and no plans to slow down anytime soon, this unit looks forward to helping all of the students at Forest Lake Elementary become their best, most authentic selves.
