What happens when you stop asking, “How do we get more members?” and start asking, “How do we make joining easier?” That’s exactly the approach Veeder (Elementary) School PTA took this year. Led by President Michael Esposito and a dedicated board, the team focused on removing barriers, increasing visibility, and creating opportunities for families to engage naturally with the PTA. This included absorbing processing fees, making membership more accessible and encouraging digital registrations. Using iPads and the Givebacks POS app at events ensure that families could join and pay on the spot, no paper forms, checks or manual data entry required. They set their sights high with a goal of 200 members by the end of September and publicized it widely at school events.

At Veeder’s Back-to-School Bash, membership was more than a table; it was part of the entire experience. With approximately 76 individuals already enrolled, the evening began with 124 memberships needed to reach the previously set goal of 200. Families arrived through a welcoming main entrance, and kids received PTA giveaways. A live DJ shared membership announcements throughout the evening, while a large digital countdown showed how many remained to achieve the goal, upping the ante and increasing excitement. By the end of the night, the display read 0 and the goal had been met!

Veeder, whose enrollment exceeds 525 students, is one of the largest elementary schools in the region. The staff received information packets and easy-access QR codes to join, as well as envelopes with an “I Joined the Pack” sticker, sparking conversations and encouraging even more staff members to sign up. PTA membership was also incorporated into the school’s Boosterthon program, with students who met an early fundraising milestone and joined the PTA becoming eligible for a free yearbook. This resulted in an increase in student membership of more than 70% compared to last year.

As president, Michael leveraged Givebacks to reconnect with former members through a friendly “We Miss You” message. Families who had transitioned to Lisha Kill Middle School were encouraged to support their new school’s PTA, creating a positive “baton handoff” and maintaining relationships between the two buildings. Through strategic thinking, strong teamwork, and a focus on removing barriers, the Veeder PTA board has transformed membership into a shared community effort that continues to strengthen family engagement and support for students.
