New York’s only state-wide organization advocating for the needs of gifted and twice exceptional (gifted and having a disability) learners

An all-volunteer 501(c)(3)

National Association for Gifted Children’s (NAGC) New York State affiliate

What We Do

  • Build awareness and understanding of what it means to be gifted or twice-exceptional
  • Promote federal, statewide, and local policies and initiatives that support and protect these underrepresented children in our schools
  • Create community for gifted and twice-exceptional children and their families

Why We Do It

How We Do It

Like you, we care. We care about our children. We care about others’ children. We care about families’ challenges when raising children with advanced learning needs. We care about the challenges of teachers to respond to the diverse learning needs in their classrooms.

New York has neither a mandate to identify or serve gifted learners nor state funding for gifted education leaving far too many futures to chance. While the nationwide average for identified gifted students is almost 7%, only 1.7% of all New York students are identified. Within minority populations, only 0.9% Black, 0.6% Hispanic, and 1.1% Native American are identified as gifted. The number of gifted students with disabilities, also known as twice-exceptional (2e), is not even tracked. (Source)

With only a small fraction of our school districts providing gifted education of any kind, most of our gifted students remain unidentified and under-served.

Experience

GiftedNYS is an all-volunteer non-profit organization of  parents, educators, and other professionals from across the state of New York. We draw from years of experience and varying perspectives to work toward our shared goal of increasing awareness, understanding, and support for gifted and twice-exceptional people in New York State.

Advocacy

We support families and educators’ advocacy efforts via educational outreach.  We also advocate for policy changes at the state level, to improve the understanding and service of students across New York with gifted education needs

Connection

We hold a variety of events throughout the year to build connection and improve awareness of the needs of this often overlooked and underserved population, including:

  • Quarterly meet-ups
  • Annual State of the State
  • Annual Advocacy Day in Albany
  • Educational webinars
  • Virtual mini-conference
