NYSATA Mission Statement

The mission of the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association shall be to advance, encourage, and improve the profession of athletic training by developing the common interests of its membership for the purpose of enhancing the quality of health care for the physically active in New York State.

Why is NYSATA important to PTA

Concussions need prompt, expert care, and athletic trainers are essential in managing these injuries. From immediate recognition to guiding a safe return to play, ATs ensure athletes are protected and supported every step of the way. Prioritize health—trust an AT.

While injuries can occur in any sport, frequently there are higher incidence rates in rugby, hockey and American football and lower incidence rates in sports like volleyball and baseball. Concussion is a significant public health issue for children and adolescents—each year in the United States, an estimated 1.1 to 1.9 million individuals under the age of 18 sustain concussions from sports and recreation. Symptoms after concussion typically resolve in 14-28 days, yet a portion (∼20%) of adolescents experience persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) beyond normal resolution (Giza et al., 2024).

Research has shown an overall incidence of concussion among youth athletes as 12.1%. The relative risk for a concussion can be almost two times greater in 18-year-olds than in 13-year-old athletes. In comparable sports, research shows girls having 1.5 times higher concussion risk than boys and athletes with a prior concussion with 3–5 times greater risk to sustain a concussion than those with no history of a concussion (Tshushima et al., 2019). It’s imperative that athletic trainers are hired to work in schools to provide the essential care necessary to manage these serious head injuries and all sport-related injuries.
