NEW WEBSITE WITH DISTRICT POLICIES AVAILABLE
NYS educators face plenty of challenges each day. Competing with cell phones for attention shouldn’t be one of them.
That’s why NYS & Governor Hochul is launching a new phone-free initiative that supports educators, protects students’ mental health, and promotes opportunities for success.
The goal is simple: reduce distractions, boost engagement, and make the classroom more manageable, so everyone can focus on what’s most important.
What’s changing?
Starting in September, New York is becoming the largest state in the nation to require statewide bell-to-bell smartphone restrictions on K-12 school grounds.
The initiative allows schools to develop their own plans for storing smartphones during the day, giving administrators and teachers the flexibility to do what works best. You can find your district’s policy at ny.gov/phonefree.
What’s not changing?
The initiative requires schools to give parents and families a way to contact their kids during the day if needed. Students who depend on phones for medical or accessibility reasons are still able to get what they need.
How did New York State develop the policy?
Governor Hochul spent a year on a listening tour with students, teachers, educators, and parents and families, honoring each perspective to put together a comprehensive policy that works for everyone.
How will it work?
Because each student, teacher, educator, school, and district have unique needs, we’re providing resources to support you at ny.gov/phonefree.
