The School Mental Health Resource and Training (SMHRT)Center, (a project within the Mental Health Association of NYS) was established when New York passed the Mental Health Education Law, to help schools implement mental health curricula in the classroom and ensure that all members of school communities (educators, administrators, support-staff, students and their families) receive the support they need to ensure their own mental wellness as well help enhance the mental wellbeing of students.
As the SMHRTCenter is funded through New York State, all of our presentations and trainings are offered at absolutely no cost to K-12 public and private schools.
Our programs provide education professionals and paraprofessionals with the tools they need to teach mental health education in the classroom. They can be held in multiple settings, both virtually and in-person, on professional development days, staff meetings for educators or school staff, at PTA/PTO meetings or events, among others. Along with our “Meet the SMHRTCenter presentation which provides an overview of our work, our most requested trainings are:

Gain a deeper understanding of the prevalence of mental health issues impacting youth. Learn how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, stressors and risks unique to students and ways to provide necessary support.
Discuss everyday stressors unique to students and understand the stigma surrounding seeking help when needed. Learn how to recognize potential mental health challenges and effectively communicate those concerns.
Develop a greater understanding of digital wellness and the role social media plays in our lives. Expand your knowledge and recognition of cyberbullying. Examine youth and adult experiences with technology and how to create healthy boundaries on social media.
